La Madrugada

As a film student and a photography student I can always appreciate a good picture, moving or still. My cousin Saadiq works in NYC doing grown-up stuff, but he walks with his camera and has a photoblog worth checking out. I've put thumbnail links to some of my favorites below. He works exclusively with a digital SLR camera.


The direct confrontation with the subject in his work environment and the unassuming facial expression remind me of August Sander's People of the 20th Century portraits. Look at Sander's work.

The ordered chaos and the cropping of any background information remind me of Aaron Siskind's flattened-look photographs. Look at Siskind's work.


Great composition. The rock formations jutting in on three sides of the frame hold the picture together and allow us to imagine the ocean continuing forever.


You gotta love those two goats deep in conversation.
